Program Location:
Cardiff, Wales is the location for this program. Cardiff is the capital of Wales, its largest city and its major commercial, political, media, and cultural center. Cardiff's population of approximately 325,000 people is extremely cosmopolitan, with a diverse range of nationalities, cultures, and religions. The city is a significant tourism center with nearly 12 million visitors per year. Cardiff is teeming with theaters, museums, monuments, and sports centers. Cardiff hosted the National Eisteddfod, an annual cultural festival, on six occasions, most recently in 2008. Students in this program will live close to the city center and experience this diversity every day.
Program Description:
This program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to broaden their horizons, to have a multi-cultural experience, to meet new people and learn new ideas, and to internationalize their education. Students will take the United States history survey. History students will visit a number of local museums, monuments, and historic sites.
Excursions: There will be several full day excursions, including the National History Museum at St Fagans, the National Museum and Gallery of Wales, and Dan-yr-Ogof Show Caves. The Wales Millennium Centre, the premier venue in Wales for touring theatre and dance companies, and the Millennium Stadium offer additional opportunities to experience culture and sport.
Please note: Prospective students should be aware that study abroad programs require a great deal of walking. You should be prepared to walk at least two to three miles each day. You may also walk over uneven, possibly slippery or rocky terrain, even in cities.
Classes: Students will meet for class three hours each morning during the week, using the afternoons, evenings and weekends for cultural enrichment.
Accommodations: Dormitory-style rooms will be provided at a college dormitory.
All TnCIS programs are academic in nature and course work that takes advantage of the program location will be the central focus. TnCIS program courses are for credit only. In Wales, students will enroll in ONE of the following courses:
HISTORY: World Civilization II (No Prerequisites)
World Civilizations II traces the political, economic, diplomatic, military, religious, and social developments integral to understanding the global affairs from the age of exploration to the present. This course will provide a survey of ideas, events, and concepts present in world history. Because of the nature of the course, factual knowledge holds great importance. See course syllabus
