Program Location

The program will take place in Segovia, a charming, provincial capital in the foothills of the Guadarrama Mountains, only 60 miles to the north of Madrid. Segovia's location makes it ideal for excursions, and the pleasantly warm, dry, summer weather and the congeniality of the Spanish people lend a spirit of cordial hospitality. Segovia retains the strong, traditional Spanish character of Old Castile and has a visible history that goes back to pre-Roman times. In Segovia, students may explore the city's Roman and medieval past and venture into the surrounding areas of Old Castile.

Program Description

The program will offer two levels of Spanish language, and will include two day-long excursions, several local excursions in and around Segovia, and family homestays in Segovia.

Extended Excursions:
There will be two day-long excursions during the program, one to the capital, Madrid, and one to the famous castle, El Escorial and the monument at the Valley of the Fallen.

Local Excursions:
There will be several afternoon excursions while in Segovia including visits to the Gothic Cathedral, the Alcαzar de Segovia, the Roman Aqueduct, and other points of interest.

Classes:
Classes will be held three hours per day during the week at a classroom facility (computers available) located on the Plaza Mayor in the center of the city.

Accommodations:
Students will live and eat three meals per day with local families. Families are accustomed to hosting students from the U.S and language is not a problem.

Academics

Students will enroll in one of the following courses:

Spanish 1020 - Beginning Spanish II (3 credits)
Spanish 2020 - Intermediate Spanish II (3 credits)

The course will be taught by Spanish professors from Tennessee. Standard college level Spanish texts and instructional materials will be used.
