Program Location

The Republic of South Africa is located on the southern tip of Africa. Bordered by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, it is considered one of the most beautiful places on earth. Cape Town is located on the southern coast and is the third largest city in South Africa. Home to nearly 3 million people, Cape Town is surrounded by mountainous cliffs called Table Mountain. It is the most popular tourist destination in South Africa due to the good climate, natural settings and relatively well developed infrastructure.

Program Description

The study abroad program will seek to familiarize students with the field of sociology and literature and will focus on historical and cultural issues specific to South Africa. Such issues as language, demographics, religion, poverty, crime, and inequality will be covered throughout the 3-week program.

The program will consist of four main parts: cultural excursions, local excursions, classes and accommodations.

Cultural Excursions:
Robben Island, a wine farm, a prison restorative justice organization, a visit to Camps Bay or another seaside experience, a student church, museums (particularly the District six museum, a fossil park), a geological tour of Cape Town, and a tour of the Cape floral kingdom.

Local Excursions:
Visit to a local school, a street children organization, health care clinic, a local business, and HIV/Aids institution.

Classes:
Classes will be held fours hours per day five days per week.

Accommodations:
Budget accommodations at a local Inn with dorm like rooms near the University of Cape Town.

Academics

Students will enroll in one of the following courses:

SOC 1020 Social Problems & Social Change
This course will focus on the increasingly acute and intense problems such as poverty, health care, crime, and inequality in South Africa. Changes in South African culture will also be examined since the end of Apartheid.

ENG 2331 African American Literature
This course will include literary selections from the eighteenth to the late 20th century. Beginning with the oral traditions of Africa and early African American life, the course will include representative works that present movements, trends, and developments in the history and traditions of African American literature. Selections from the folk literature, the personal and slave narratives, fiction, poetry, essays, and drama will be represented. In addition to examining the historical context from which the literature evolved, the course will also address the critical and theoretical issues that African American writers have presented in the American literary tradition.
