Program Location

This program will be held at the Tipperary Institute located in the town of Thurles. Thurles is a medium sized town located on the main train line approximately 90 minutes from either the capital city of Dublin or Cork. Since becoming a member of the European Union, Ireland has become one of its most progressive members, making it an ideal place to experience the latest European trends. Ireland also boasts an extremely rich historical background with many ties to our own culture here in the U.S. The beauty of the Irish countryside is also world renowned. While in Thurles, students will have the opportunity to interact with other Irish students at the Tipperary Institute as well as well as with the people of the town. The goal of the program is for students to develop personal ties with the people of Ireland and its rich culture.

Program Description

This program is designed to provide students with a choice of courses while they experience the Irish culture first hand. Trips to cultural sites will also convey important information about both contemporary and historical Ireland.

The program will consist of four main parts: cultural excursions, local excursions, classes and accommodations.

Cultural Excursions:
During the program there will be a three day excursion to Dublin where students will be introduced to many of the important sites such as Trinity College, Christ Church cathedral, the Guiness Brewery, several sites relating to Irelands literary tradition such as the Dublin Writers Museum, and the famous Temple Bar district. Another full day excursion will also be planned to the city and environs of cork. There are also excursions planned to important sites near Thurles, including the towering glory of the Rock of Cashel, located only a few kilometers away. Opportunities will also be available for students to explore Ireland on their own.

Local Excursions:
During the afternoons, students will visit sites of local interest in Thurles and participate in cultural and social activities in town. Individual instructors will also arrange local excursions related to their classes.

Classes:
Classes will be held on the campus of the Tipperary Institute. TI is a small institution so there will be many opportunities to interact with its students. TnCIS classes will take place three hours per day during the week with the afternoons left open for excursions and personal activities.

Accommodations:
While in Thurles students will live with local families who are used to housing students attending the Tipperary Institute. The family home stay will give students insights into everyday life in Ireland and the opportunity to develop personal ties with the people. Breakfast and lunch will be provided by the families.

Academics

The following courses will be offered:

ENGL 2220: British Literature II / LAS 2020: Special Topics in Liberal Arts Introduces students to the rich heritage of Irish literature, culture, and history. Ireland has a strong tradition of oral literature that translates into theater, poetry and music, and we will weave the strands of these genres together. Key themes include: the bardic tradition; issues of gender; myth and cultural memory; the writer as social critic and chronicler.
