Program Location

The program will be held in two locations. We will land in Athens, Greece, but then travel directly to Tolon, Greece where the first half of the program will take place. Tolon is located in the north-eastern corner of the Peloponnese, very near Nafpliuon, which was the first capital of the modern nation. Although Tolon has become more popular with tourists in recent years, it has retained most of its charm and all of its friendliness. Tolon is also located near important cultural sites such as Mycenae, Argos, Tyrins, Corinth, Epidauros and Olympia, most of which we will visit during the program. The second half of the program will be spent in Athens, the birthplace and home of Socrates and Plato. During this second half of the session, we will visit Delphi, the Acropolis, the ancient agora, and the National Archaeology Museum of Athens.

Program Description

Greece is justifiably considered the "birthplace of western philosophy," and much of its history relates back to the primary thinkers and artists of the ancient civilization, when so many works of philosophy, the arts, and even history reflected the same principles. The two courses in this program will begin by studying works from this period and will emphasize how the philosophy of the time reflected other fields, such as art and architecture. The many excursions in the program will serve to exemplify these points. From this foundation students will go on to consider important milestones in philosophy and ethics as they developed in the western world.

Academics

The following courses will be offered:

PHIL 1030: Introduction to Philosophy is an investigation of the fundamental questions pertaining to reality, truth, freedom, the nature of humankind, the existence of God and social/political theory.

PHIL 2400: Introduction to Ethics is an introduction to moral theory and/or a consideration of a variety of moral problems, including abortion, suicide and euthanasia, capital punishment, women's issues, environmental issues and war.
