Program Location

The session will begin in Paris but will be primarily hosted in the city of Cherbourg where an infrastructure is in place to provide all services to the students. Cherbourg is in the heart of Normandy on a peninsula that reaches into the English Channel. It is a naval port, an international yachting harbor, and a famous terminal for transatlantic liners and for Allied supplies and armaments during World War II.

Program Description

This program is designed to provide students with a choice of courses while they experience French culture first hand. One course will be intensive language instruction in French and one course will be an introduction to French culture through film taught in English. Both courses will feature applied learning experiences by assignments outside the classroom. Trips to cultural sites will also convey important information about both contemporary and historical France.

The program will consist of four main parts: cultural excursions, local excursions, classes and accommodations.

Cultural Excursions:
The program will begin and end with two-day stays in Paris in addition to two full-day excursions to cultural sites in the vicinity of Cherbourg such as Mont-St.-Michel and the Normandy beaches. Some tours require climbing stone stairways and more than a mile of walking.

Local Excursions:
During several afternoons each week, students will visit various sites of importance in Cherbourg as well as museums and any appropriate local events.

Classes:
Classes will be held three hours per day five days per week. Students may only register for one class.

Accommodations:
Students will live in dormitory housing on a French college campus and eat lunch each day in the student cafeteria. Students are responsible for their own breakfasts and most dinners.

Academics

The following courses will be offered:

FREN 1020: Beginning French II is further study of the French language for students who have already been introduced to reading, writing, and speaking it. Lessons will focus on vocabulary building, grammar, conversation, and culture. Students will apply the language skills through guided learning experiences such as shopping in local French specialty stores and by planning and executing a trip to Paris. Opportunities will be provided to interact with French students.

Hum 2810: Introduction to Film Studies is an overview of film history using selected feature films about France or in French with subtitles in English. Basic elements of film expression for understanding and analyzing narrative cinema will be taught, and films will be used as the starting point for learning about French language, culture, and history. Students will tour the Cinema Institute at Cherbourg and sites in France depicted in the films. The course will be conducted in English.
