Program Location

From glistening beaches of Fortaleza to the tropical marvel of Rio de Janeiro, the TnCIS program in Brazil offers students the chance to experience an incredible diversity of landscapes and peoples. Brazil is the largest country in Latin America (roughly the size of the continental USA). It is the only Latin American country to speak Portuguese (seventh most spoken language in the world - which places it ahead of French, Japanese, and German). It is home to one of the world’s largest industrial economies (tenth in the world); at the same time it has the world’s largest tropical rain forest. It boasts lively music and dance (from samba's entrancing rhythms to the Northeast's axé -charged beats), as well as a long list of truly distinctive cultural traditions formed through a blend of European, African, and Indigenous antecedents.

The TnCIS program will take place in two locations. First is the Northeastern city of Fortaleza. Located just 3 degrees south of the equator, the city of two and one-half million (fifth largest in Brazil) is surrounded by miles of sandy tropical beaches. Founded over 500 years ago, the city today is the political seat of the state of Ceará, an important sea port, and a recreational retreat for Brazilians. The TnCIS program will be affiliated with Federal University of Ceará and classes will be held on its campus. The program will be in Fortaleza for just over 4 weeks.

The second location is Rio de Janeiro, a vibrant mega-city famous for its natural beauty (ocean, beaches, and escarpment), culture (from samba to umbanda), and history (Brazil’s capital for 125 years). The TnCIS program will visit Rio for three days, staying in Copacabana. Excursions are planned to Sugar Loaf and Corcovado.
